replacing thrust bearing
Re: replacing thrust bearing
Why buy a whole new clutch if you only need a throwout bearing?
dfa_crunch: the bearing is on the end of the clutch release fork and is positioned between the transmisson and the clutch. The transmission has to be removed to replace it. You might want to do some research on clutch basics to give you a better understanding.

At the hassle it is to pull the tranny, remove the clutch... replace the bearing... and even more quesitonable... the reason why it failed... I'd atleast feel safer with a new clutch setup entirely. Kill a bird with one pebble. Not worth the hassle to got through all the trouble and only replace a 35 dollar part.
Re: replacing thrust bearing
i dont got all the money in the world to spend either i only take in like 200 bucks a week and with car insurance and gas on that car its like nothing i dont got the money to be spending...how much u think its gonna cost me to just get a whole new clutch
Re: replacing thrust bearing
well... are you replacing the stock clutch?
and do you plan on replacing the clutch yourself?
What year vehicle do you have and what miles are on teh current clutch, and what makes you so sure it's the bearing?
If your on a tight budget and your absolutely sure (I mean 100%) everything else in your setup is fine. I guess you could try just replacing the bearing itself.
But if you want to play it safe... stock replacements usually run like $200-300.00. If I remember correctly years ago I brought a stock replacement from Advanced auto for I believe $250.00 and it had a 1 year replacement... I spent that year ripping down the track and racing on it... and of course I killed it... went back to the store and got a new clutch 12 months later... I couldn't believe it.

Oh... so those things are that easy to slip onto the fingers... I really wouldn't know I never installed one... but I can't say I'd rather pull the tranny once and get everything complete and right the first time and be trouble free. It's no hassle to pull the clutch out and swap em once your there... it's only a couple bolts and a resurfaced flywheel.
Re: replacing thrust bearing
its got 91000 miles on it and im not sure if its a stock clutch or not i just got the car. i dont know what im doing but my stepfather knows where its at and knows how to fix it but im wondering if we can do it just putting it up with jacks and stands if we cant get at it waht do you think its gonna cost to have someone fix it for me
Re: replacing thrust bearing
91,000 miles... lol's
I think it's time to just get a new clutch.
Your clutch has been a true warrior.
You can do it on Jack stands with a some boards under neath them to lift the car up higher... and drop the tranny (easier said than done) but with a good manual and some tech knowledge you should be able to get the job done.
