Replacing Diff. Fluid

How does one go about replacing the differential fluid in a 93-97 rear end?

The rear is out of the car. I've done this already with my third-gen, and I did a quick look on the 4th gen rear end, and it's slightly different, I don't remember seeing a plug to put the fluid in..

How do we go about filling it, and how do we know when it's filled to the point it's supposed to be.

i would get a new diff cover... like a TA performance one, then all you do to let the fluid out is unscrew a bolt and it comes out.... to refill you open a bolt at the top and use a pump to put the oil back it.... makes it alot easier

This will probably be a one time thing, not worried about the mess, the gasket will be replaced anyways. I'm just wondering where the hell to fill it up at, and how do I know when to stop? (My thirdgen was supposed to be filled until it reached the plug)

Re: Replacing Diff. Fluid

There is a plug located on the front side of the diff. Use a standard 3/8 ratchet in the square hole. You will want to clean out the hole first so you can get the ratchet all the way in and prevent rounding out the square.

Go to the local parts store and buy a hand pump and 2 QTs of differential gear lube and a small bottle of limited slip differential additive.

Use the pump to put 1 Qt. of fluid in and then add the limited slip additive in the diff. Then start pumping the 2nd Qt. in until the fluid starts pooring back out the whole. The car should be level when doing this. Once the fluid start coming back out, install the plug. I like to put RTV on the threads of the plug to help prevent leaks. I also put a thin layer of RTV on the gasket to help prevent leaks.

Re: Replacing Diff. Fluid

i just replaced my fluid and gasket the other day. just to help out i lowered my sway bar down, just the ones that hold the bars not the end links connections and that helped alot. i also used high temp rtv on the fill plug and gasket. i have drove it about 50 miles since then and no leaks. plus if you lower the sway bar you can grease the poly bushings and get rid of the squeaking if you have any. i used 75w-90 mobil one synthetic and they say you don't need the limited slip additive but i used it anyway just to be safe. i also bought one of those pumps from pep boys $7.99 it is worth it and fits right on top of the bottle and works like a charm. there is not enough room for the bottle to fit and tilt to fill up the diff. good luck
