Replace gear or whole ten bolt?

So my 10 bolt is shot im pretty sure (rear locks up every couple feet and makes horrible clunking noise). what would be the better route to go? new gears or just replace the entire rearend? im having a real hard time finding a whole rear end tho.

Re: Replace gear or whole ten bolt?

my differential went out in my last 10 bolt, i rebuilt the whole thing, changed to a eaton diff and put in some richmond gears, 1500 miles later its trashed again, if you want something thats gonna last go ahead and upgrade the whole thing

Re: Replace gear or whole ten bolt?

It's usually cheaper to replace the entire unit than rebuild.
I picked up my 01 SS complete 3.42 geared rear (minus brakes) for $150 after I trashed my built $1000 , Eaton diff, Moser Axles, 4.10 geared 10 bolt.
picked it up from a friend that went to a Moser 9". Average price for rears around here is $200. if you need to get one shipped, it runs $100+ for freight shipping.
