98 vs 99 up positraction

is there a diference in the std diff. carrier in 1998 camaro ss vs 1999 up ss?? I believe i read this somewhere that they all went to the optional "torsen"?? carrier. Is this true?? If so is it that much better?? was the 98 deficient in some way??

Re: 98 vs 99 up positraction

I'm not sure of the truth of that or not, but most f-bodies that have lsd use an Auburn unit, which uses a clutch setup- the wheels are locked together until there is enough force to break one loose, such as going around a turn, there will be enough torque on the tires to make the axle shafts turn at different speeds. A torsen diff uses gears and I can't really explain that one but it will transfer torque to the wheel with the most traction (opposite of an open diff). A clutch type is better for drag racing because the wheels get a 50/50 split, where a torsen is considered better for autocross/road racing and I would consider it better for daily driving. The torsen is most likely to last longer (in an effective state) since there are no clutch parts to wear out. Keep in mind that the auburn diffs in f-bodies have a cone type clutch setup, which is generally considered inferior to the clutch pack setup that is the norm.

Re: 98 vs 99 up positraction

Regular Torsen sucks for auto-x, cornering really hard causes the inside wheel to get all the power and acts like an open rear.
Torsen uses a torque system, multiplying torque from the slipping wheel to the gripping wheel, but if the slipping wheel has no traction then nothing can go to the other wheel since Zero times anything equals zero.
Torsen T2R is what auto-x'ers use since it has preload built in so there is always a mulitplication factor avaialble. (I'll get one eventually).
All 98+ 4th gens with LSD come with the Torsen unit, Auburn was an option on the SS's.

A 95 would definitely have an Auburn. My 98 has an Auburn as well, at least that's what I saw when I popped the cover . I'm agreed I thought Torsen was the optional one on later LS1s? Either that or they must have switched after the 98 model year.
