Replace 93 6 speed with 94-02 6 speed?

I am wanting to build the 6 speed but when Ive called around, the parts for the 93, being a differnet transmission from all other 4 gens, are expensive (over $1k for gears alone).

WIll a 94-02 6 speed work and what is needed to convert? If not, my only other choice is going to be go to a slushbox (have a Turbo400 laying at my Dads place but I dont want to use it if I dont have to)

You can't use a 98-02 T56. They have a different clutch setup (conventional "pusher", vs LT1 unique "pullback" design) and a longer input shaft. Stick with the 94-97 units. There are completely interchangeable, and a direct bolt in. Additionally, they have a higher torque rating than the 93, and a much steeper O/D 6th gear. Downside is that if you had the 93 M28 with the 2.73:1 rear axle ratio (GU2), the 94-97 1st gear ratio (2.66 vs 3.36) is going to require to to use at least a 3.42 rear axle ratio. If you have the M29 with the 3.23 gears (GU5), you will be marginal, with the change in 1st gear only being 2.97 to 2.66.

You will not have to/be able to hook up the skip shift feature that was added to the 94's. But everyone unhooks that anyway. The reverse lockout feature is the same for all years.

You also have check the compatibility of the VSS sensor. I do not know if the signal from the 94-97 units is compatible with the 93 ECM and speedo. The 93 drives the speedo directly off the VSS. 94 and up drives the speedo off the PCM, based on VSS input to the PCM.

Thanks for the info. I have the 3.23s so the longer gears will hurt but I will be going to 3.73 in the near future.

I know first gear will be steep for a while but I will have to deal with that for a bit.
