Removing U-Joints from LS1 Driveshaft
Removing U-Joints from LS1 Driveshaft
I'm having to move my yokes and brand new U-Joints from one LS1 Driveshaft to a new one I just bought. The reason I'm having to do this is because some supposedly reputable shop in Houston swapped my perfectly balanced custom driveshaft for a stock LS1 driveshaft that is so warped that it will blur your vision above 65 mph from pure vibration. I seem to remember from years back that, because of plastic embedded in the crevice between the Ujoint cups and the yoke that it was best to heat the joint prior to attempted removal. Do you guys recall that?
Thanks,
Dave

THanks, I have a HF store near here (Albany, NY) so I went and bought this tool:

I have a propane torch as well as a welding Oxycetalyne set so I'm good for the heat too.

Re: Removing U-Joints from LS1 Driveshaft
Thread from the dead but this really helped me out. I'd never replaced ujoints that weren't retained with clips before so I sat and stared at it a while before searching. Once I took the torch to it, it was a piece of cake to remove. Where each cap is retained, there are two little "nibs" poking out on each side of the flange, apply heat until the nibs pop out and about 2 inches of nylon expands out. Be sure to wear gloves and eye protection, the ends can come FLYING off not to mention you'll likely boil the grease inside the ujoint. I found it very easy to remove and reinstall while everything was still hot.
