Removal of Backing Plates?

Getting ready to drop the old 10 bolt for a 9" and had a question that may sound a little dumb. I don't know what the backing plates are...and how do I remove them. I did a search but all i could find was that the calipers bolt to them or something??? Thanks in advance.

Re: Removal of Backing Plates?

The backing plates bolt to the ends of the axle "tubes" of the rear housing. There are 4 bolts that hold that to the tubes. Yes the plates are what the two bolts on the brake calipers mount to. If your 9" doesnt already have backing plates (it might) you need to remove them from your old rear. It involves removing the C-clips from each axle (inside the 10 bolt cover) and pulling each axle along with unbolting the backing plates. I've had a Moser 9" and now a 12 bolt and they both came with backing plates, although each of the rears were used, not new. Not sure how they come from Moser.
