Redoing Gears At This Instant. Help!!!
Ok im redoing my gears b/c they whine like crazy, they r richmond 3.73s for a 2 series carrier. ok now the queston is how many shims do I need to get pressed on the pinion? in other words pinion depth. I cant get the exact match. Thanks
Re: Redoing Gears At This Instant. Help!!!
The pinion depth should be engraved on the face of the pinion gear. But you won't be able to set it up unless you have the tool to do it. There is a tool that slides into your axle tubes. On that, there is basically a rod that goes from one side of your housing to the other which is basically the center line of your axle tubes and one side has a flat face on it. If I remember correctly from my set up, you would have to measure from the face of the pinion to the flat side of that rod and that would show your pinion depth. But thats with the pinion installed and the pinion nut snuged down and also with bearing and shim(s) installed. Its a lot easier if you take an old bearing and hone it out so it just slides over the pinion gear with shim or your gonna have to press the bearing on and pull it before and after each depth check. It's kinda hard to explain. Also, you may not have luck getting those Richmonds quiet cause thats just the nature of most Richmond gear sets. And if your already in there, you might want to check into getting a solid pinion spacer instead if a crush sleeve if thats what your using cause crush sleeves do just that when you start hammering on it and your setup will drift out when that happens which in turn would bring on even more noise.

Not exactly sure. Maybe someone else on knows the exact name. I would imagine it would be some kind of pinion depth setup tool. The dial indicator and magnetic base would be used to check and set up backlash.

Just got done with tranny class over the summer and we used that tool. I don't remember what its called, but the tool itself is a $3000 tool. It doesn't make sence cause there's not that much to it, but that's how much my tranny teacher said it was.

3 G's???!
We're talking the same tool, right? 2 round pieces of steel or aluminum that slide into each axle tube with a round bar with a flat spot on it that slids into them? Then you take a measurement from the flat spot on that to the face of the pinion? Maybe you guys had a really high tech setup tool.
