Recommended Clutch?? '96 z-28
I need help decided what brand/type of clutch I should install on my 1996 z-28. It has about 310 horsepower, but will eventually have around 400-450. I have no plans to bump it up higher than that. It has the factory rear, which, I think is a 3.42?? The factory driveshaft will probably be upgraded in the future. By the way, will I need to upgrade to a 12 bolt rear for 400 hp?? I don't want to have a bionic left leg to work the clutch pedal, - a bit harder than factory would be okay though.

I installed a Spec stage 3 and Spec billet flywheel a couple of weeks age. I was a little worried about buying Spec because of all the negative posts about them. There were a couple of minor glitches. The starter had to be shimmed to match the new flywheel and the clutch fork needed some attitude adjusting to get into place. After fixing them it has been the best clutch I have ever had. I had no vibration issues or weird noises. It drives very smooth at all speeds. The pedal engagement and feel is just like stock. It is very grabby. Once you relearn to how to take off it's no big deal. I haven't launched it but I have gone through the gears a bit. Its far better than the SLP unit I have in my other car. I can't wait till I get some more miles on it. I want to see what it will do one N20.

I have had the same problem. Frankly, I have spent about the past 3 months debating on what clutch to get. Finally I ordered the Spec Stage 3 on Friday.
I was told by many that it wasn't a good clutch and was told by others to go with a Stage 2 instead and that the Stage 3 would be too much for on the street. I drove 1 car with the Stage 2, 4 Cars with the stage 3 and 1 car with a stage 4.
The stage 2 car was the worst I didn't like the engagment and didn't like the pedal feel. The stage 4 was nice, a lot better than I thought it would be, but didnt seem to feel as good as the stage 3. All the cars with the stage 3 felt great. Awesome pedal feel and smooth engagement. I would say go with the stage 3 or 4. Both are very close, the stage 4 to me felt a bit more harsh but would still be streetable.

Mcleod single disk, after knowing a couple people personally that have had spec clutches blow up and total their cars from the debris flying through the floor/firewall/taking chunks off the block, I'll never own a spec clutch in my lifetime. I don't know how they didn't loose a leg from how bad their cars were torn up.

Well all I can say is Ive had my SPEC 4 for 50,000 miles and its just starting to slip. Im in the process of pulling my transmission out to see if it is the clutch that is worn out or if my flywheel is destroyed. Ive seen other clutches with similar compound eat a deep grove into the flywheel. Im kinda hoping that the flywheel is toast because I have a fresh flywheel that has never been machined to go in. If it is the clutch you better belive Ill have another SPEC 4 in its place ASAP. My car is a daily driver and once you get used to the SPEC 4s engaugement its a very streetable clutch. My car still has the 3.23s sence it was an auto at one time, so its alittle harder on the clutch when taking off but I think my clutch is a testament that SPEC clutches can last if given propper breakin time (500 miles IS NOT enough!!!) My friend got his at the same time as mine and only gave his 500 miles as the manufacturer says and his was toast in 10,000 miles. I gave mine atleast 2,000 miles and its lastest MANY MANY track passes and miles of stop and go traffic without an issue. I beat on my car almost daily, its best pass isnt fantastic at a 12.74@112mph but the fact that its lasted 50,000 miles is. Sorry for the long post, but I was really pleased with my SPEC clutch. Alot of people bash them but its worked very well for me. Hope that helps you make your choice. Oh by the way Id pass on the SPEC 3 and go right to the SPEC 4. The stage 3 has a sprung disk, thats just another thing to cause you problems. Just go with the 4. Ive driven/raced both and once youve driven the 4 there is no real difference between the two other than the stage 3 is alittle less harsh when taking off from a light and doesnt seem to shock the tires quite as hard at the drag strip. But Id rather have to rev it alittle more to take off than spit clutch springs out on the drag strip. Anywho, Good luck and have fun bangin the gears.

Ram Powergrip HD! I have one, not on-off, but not really slippable either. Seen one live a decently long life behind a 540 rwhp vette launching hard
(1.40x) on slicks, owner said it was one of the grabbier clutches he'd ever had.
