Rears in our cars

Can we get rears out of other cars and put them in our cars for some strength? Get rid of our piece of crap 10 bolts for something that hold much better til I can get the 12 bolt?

Re: Rears in our cars

There isn't much available from a donor car that is any better than the rearend that is currently in your car. You can buy some aftermarket parts that will add some limited strength to your existing rearend, but the reliability will obviously depend on the amount of power you put through it. Some 4th gen F-body rearends just seem to be more forgiving than others of the same make, but you have know way of telling which ones put up with more abuse that others. Driving habits and trans type will also play a role in longevity of the rearend. Most people will agree that the best solution for this "weak link" problem is to save for an aftermarket direct replacement complete rearend from companies like Moser or Strange. Unless you are putting some huge HP numbers to the ground, these aftermarket 12 bolt units will work just fine, providing you follow the recommended break-in procedure. It's a large chunk of cash to lay out, but in the long run you will be happy you did rather than trying to put a band-aid on something that has a great deal more potential to continue to break. I have a Moser 12 bolt with 4:11 gears that I have subjected to 10 lbs. of boost, a 6-speed trans with a street twin clutch and slicks with several 1/4 mile passes on it and it continues to perform flawlessly.
