Lightbulb Rear Install... in driveway...

i know it possible, but can it be done in a weekend? in a garage? and if so... would i need a spring compressor? or any other specialty tools? my friends 95 camaro rear is basically dying slowly... he has a brand new rear matched up and ready to go... i just want to know if it would be practicle to do it in a garage with a few friends... or pay to have a shop do it...

Re: Rear Install... in driveway...

Springs on the rear are not compressed nearly as much as the front, the rears practically fall out.

Re: Rear Install... in driveway...

Very possible, it takes me (by myself) about 4 hours from jacking to car to driving it out of the driveay. No spring compressors, just need a jack and two jackstands with basic hand tools. Somethings from experience:

1) the loops that hold the brake line on the rear, bend them back and hank the calipers with bailer wire or a wire hanger.

2) unbolt the struts first, then panhard, driveshaft, torque arm, and finally the lca's. I have found it eaiser that way, also when i install it i work backwards from where i started.

3) if it has never been taken out have alot of wd-40 or whatever you use to brake loose bolts. The swaybar endlinks, if they are old, never fail to break! I'd soak all the bolts in wd-40 or whatever about 5-10 mins before you start to tear it down.

4) BE ORGANIZED.... not too much you can switch around, but i hate loosing bolts so when i take them off i put them back into on of the parts and just screw the nut on so it stays.

5) when lowering it, be carefull of the springs, do it moderatly slowly. When install the springs, jack it up so their is little pressure, but enough that you can turn the spring in the boot and here it rest aginst the indention in the boot.

Ummm....i think thats about it, i might be missing something, but its a learn as you go process. 2 guys, shouldn't take you more than 8 hours to swap a rear.

I just came inside from installing my rear. Took me about 1.5 hours to install Gas tank, heat shields rear end and button everything up. Its a cake walk man, a cake walk. The post above is pretty good.

Took about 4 hours myself. It's very easy, with all basic tools. In my case I had a air compressor to help. I even got a couple of pics before and after shots of the rear in my site.

Re: Rear Install... in driveway...

I think it took me 4-5 hrs to swap mine by myself. That included swapping my brakes and axles over into the new rear before installing it. Very easy to do in a home garage. Just make sure you have a break over bar and penetrating lube.

dam, that's fast. It took my brother and I (second time doing for me), both working very efficiently ~4hours, including the time to put the car on the ramps. Good time
