Rear gear ratio?
Rear gear ratio?
Anyone know how I would find out what gears are installed in the rear axle on my '94 Camaro z28? Or am I better off taking it to a mechanic and having them open it up and check?
Re: Rear gear ratio?
I think on LT1s you can just look at the shifter (if it's an auto) and if you can select first gear it is 3.23s. If you can't I believe it's 2.73s.
Or just look at the RPO codes:
GU2 = 2.73
GU4 = 3.08(V6 autos)
GU5 = 3.23
GU6 = 3.42(V8 manuals)
Or just look at the RPO codes:
GU2 = 2.73
GU4 = 3.08(V6 autos)
GU5 = 3.23
GU6 = 3.42(V8 manuals)
Re: Rear gear ratio?
The easiest way to find out if you can't get the RPO codes, or if you think the gears may have been changed is to put the rear end up on jackstands in neutal and rotate the rear wheels. The ratio between tire revolutions/driveshaft revolutions = rear axle ratio. Of course,you need to measure carefully as the ratios are pretty close together.

Cool thanks guys, this should give me something to do today. O' second question, I know on my shift plate I can't select "1". It will only go to "2" which you can see on my website. I'll have to double check but I think I might have 2.73. If I do have these gears are they any good? Or should I look into changing them?
