Unhappy Rear End Weeping...

My car has been sitting idle for the last month due to poor weather.
Today I was taking a look at it and I noticed a puddle of oil near the back of the car.

I guess it would be the rear end leaking.........seeing as how there isn't any other sources of oil at the back.

Easy fix?
Could it be just a gasket?

most likely the pinoin seal. See if its wet at the front where the ds goes in or around the cover. Mine leaks from the pinoin seal a few drops a week, not worth fixing it to me.

Yup - looks like it's the pinion seal......

If I end up getting it fixed - I guess I should throw in 4.10's.

You can fix it with out removing the gears. It doesn't take very long at all.

Re: Rear End Weeping...

Get a GM seal. Its got a bead of sealant around the outside of the seal where it meets the housing, which is also a source for leaks...

Aw damn.............really?

I've got a whole year of warrenty left on my car and was hoping they would have tear apart and put back together my rear end in order to fix it............while I purchase a new set of GM 4.10's and substitute them in place of my stock 3.42's......

But.......since you're saying the fix can happen without having to take it apart - I guess that's a dead end.

Is the fix that you speak of the absolute correct way to have it done - or is it the cheapest for the guy with not much money?
I don't have much money but..........I do have a warrenty.

Re: Rear End Weeping...

The seal drives in from the front side of the housing so there is no reason to pull the rear cover and gears out. All you do is take the driveshaft off, remove the pinion yoke and then your staring at the seal. You could go borrow some sticky tires and kill your 10bolt if you wanted to. Thats not very hard.
