rear end part help

thanks in advance for any and all suggestions
i have a basically stock 2000 z28 automatic, and am looking into changing the rear end gears for a 3.73 from the 2.73?(gu2) that i have now. any part numbers, specs or advice is greatly appreciated, there are a lot of parts with a lot of different measurements that i dont know a lot about.

the reason for the switch is last week i was on the highway and was doing 80@2000rpm and 115@3000 so its worthless having gears that high bc i could never redline in 4th gear.

i might also go with the 3.42, i think it could be enough of a change that i would be fine with it too

Re: rear end part help

youll never redline in 4th gear, but with higher numeric gear ratios, youll be revving higher on the highway, which means more wear on your engine, and worse mileage. doesnt mean you shouldnt do it, just be aware of the downsides.

Re: rear end part help

ya i know im not redlining in fourth but 115 @ only 3000 rpms is a little ridiculous seeing as how i cant take it over 130 bc its a convertible and it feels a little shaky at the windows at least i can get there a little quicker silly little mustangs can almost beat me off the line so i wanted to change that

Re: rear end part help

You either need to get a new 3-series carrier (your car currently has a 2-series carrier with the 2.73 gears), and a set of 3.73 gears for a 3-series carrier; or you need to get 3.73 gears for a 2-series carrier (cheapest solution). The rear in your car is a GM 7.5/7.625" 10-bolt.

Thunder Racing has what you need.

You will need:

-3.73 ring and pinion for 7.5/7.625" 10-bolt, 2-series carrer (The Motive gears are good.)

-install kit (if the rear hasn't been rebuilt before, go for a high end kit. Consider the Ratech "Deluxe" kit for 7.5" 10-bolt. You probably don't need the solid spacer.)

-2 quarts of lube (75W90) and the GM limited slip differential additive.
