Hi all, I have a 95 camaro z28 w/ 170K miles on it. It is auto. When driving at slow speeds, and i mean slow as in 5-10mph or what i call "parking lot speed", i hear a steady knock coming from what sounds like the rear end ONLY WHEN ACCELERATING. So obviously this worries me, but I decide to drive it for awhile longer and see what happens. The problem persists for about a month or two, and then all of sudden the problem shifts and starts knocking when i am DECELERATING (still only can hear the noise around 5-10mph). So i take it to the shop and the mechanic says he can't do anything short of take the whole thing apart and hope something is apparent, because he can't recreate the noise while its on the lift and thus cant diagnose the problem. He tells me it will probably be about 2-3 months before the noise starts getting louder, i can feel the knock, etc. and the whole rear end will need to be replaced. It has been about 4 months since he told me that(crossing my fingers), and the noise is steady as can be but does not seem to be getting worse. It has been a total of 7 months now since i first heard the noise, and the car still drives great. Any ideas what this may be? If i do need a rear end, about how much can i expect to pay parts + labor? How long can the rear-end keep up like that? ANY advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you,
Dustin
