Rear End Gears :: Installation

Ok, i recently had a thread discussing what 3.73's would do for me performance wise, and so being im convinced this is the ratio for me, i bought a set of richmond gears from summit and the complete installation kit (bearings, seals, shims, etc). locally i've priced some shops to do the work and the best offer is right at about $550. So now the burning question is has anyone here ever installed a set of ring and pinion gears in one of these cars? if so, can you give me a sort of "how to" description on the installation and propper shimming of the gears. maybe someone could give me an article or link to a set of installation instructions. and then again, given maybe from someones experience or an attempted install, doing it myself might be a bad idea? the past experience i have is installation of headers, a cam, opti distributor, removal of the intake manifold, i've installed a transmission in a 95 trans am. so...should i let the professionals do it or is this something i may be able to handle? id only have a time window of about one weekend

lots of speacialized tools and knowledge is needed, or the gears are ruined

I am ASE cetrified I hate doing them, I let someone who likes it do it

check the local forum(near you) for someone who does them, there is a couple guys up here near detroit, might be someone there by you

You will need a dial indicator and a press for the installation. Do you have those tools?
You might find instructions with a search in the drivetrain forum, where this thread should be.

That would be my thought too. Richmonds are known to be a little noisier then other gear sets, so a pro might have better luck setting them up. A few have claimed the Richmonds can be set up with very little noise, but I believe that is rare. The good news is, there stronger. PS, had Richmonds and the noise was to much for me. I went with Motives.

PLEASE post in the correct forum. This did not belong in "LT1/LT4 Engine Tech".

main thing is to get your pinion depth right,if thats off your whole shiming and backlash will be off too.i've installed plenty of gears.also what series is your carrier?i think you will need a 3 series carrier if you have a 2.73 gear in it now,so you might have to buy a carrier,and i have one for sale out of a 87 iroc,posi unit too!

No, richmond makes 3.73 for a 2 series, I bought the same set he has.
