rear end gears

I have a question about the rear end in my 95 Z28. What are the stock rear gears in them. I want to swap them out for a set of 3:73. How much difference will this make on a car that is stock beside the k&n cai. And how hard are these gears to install.

Re: rear end gears

You have to tell us more about your car - which trans?

M6 - 3.42:1 (RPO code "GU6")

A4 (base rear axle) - 2.73:1 (GU2)

A4 (performance rear axle option) - 3.23:1 (GU5)

Look for the RPO codes on the build code tag in the glove box, or go here and enter your VIN #:

http://www.compnine.com/vid.php

How much difference you will feel with 3.73's will depend which gears you have now.

Re: rear end gears

I never noticed much of a difference with the same change as you are talking about. I paid someone to do it, since the setup has to be perfect and I don't like doing stuff under the car and no real place to work on it. I bought them used on Ebay and only paid $200 for parts and labor.

Re: rear end gears

Going to the 3.73's will make it feel like you added 15% more torque at the rear wheels.... you should be able to feel that, particularly off the line. Of course you will hit redline at 15% lower MPH in each gear, so there's a tradeoff.

^^^ I think he meant hit redline at 15% lower mph in each gear.

You should be able to notice a slight difference. Dont expect a lot though.

And I would not attempt the gear install. It is not a simple swap. It requires special tools and experience. You can ruin a set very quickly if they arent in rigth.
