rear end gear break in?

rear end gear break in?
hey i just got some new gears and the mechanic told me they need about 5000 miles of break in time before i get to play with my car. this seems a little excessive to me but i dont know. what are your opinions on break in times?

The gearsets ever I bought said to drive it around in the city for 20 miles, then break for 30 minutes, then another 20 miles, then break for 30 minutes, then another 20 miles, and finally break for 30 minutes.
Depends on your gearset, though. Some gearsets come "ready-to-romp", meaning no break-in period...
