questions for 12SCNDZ
I'm getting my 4l60e rebuilt (again after only 5k miles) and I was wondering when you do your rebuilds, do you always replace all the electrical stuff? The shop that is rebuilding my tranny said that they always replace all the solenoids etc. This is making the rebuild a lot more expensive than the first time. I was just wondering what the industry standard was I guess. Is it common for shops to replace all the electronics in the transmission? They also convinced me to upgrade to a heavy duty sungear shell, do a sonnax valve body fix thing, and to take off my transgo shift kit. They are charging me 1700$ for the entire job. (labor prices are jacked up in San Jose, CA. 85$/hr) I'm willing to pay that, since I tried taking shortcuts the first time I rebuilt my tranny and I got what I paid for basically. I was just wondering if this shop was up to par or not. Thanks!
Re: questions for 12SCNDZ
You can send him a Private message...to get a quicker response. btw, I'm assuming that's who your looking for..
Re: questions for 12SCNDZ
You'd be better off saving that $1700 and letting Frank do the work himself. He can do it cheaper and, most likely, do it better in the process since he specializes in these trannies. He knows his stuff and his 4L60/Es are proven to low 11s/high 10s, even with nitrous engines.
Re: questions for 12SCNDZ
I am in Canada and I shipped mine to him, it was worth every penny, and as said above he is scheaper so you will get a better trans and cover you shipping costa for $1700 easy.
Re: questions for 12SCNDZ
Here are a couple threads about shipping your tranny, from California to CPT 1, from California to CPT 2, and this has a lot of shipping info.. Good luck!
BTW, even geting all the options + shipping charges it will probably cost less or around the same as getting it done locally, and you don't have to worry if it is done right or not...
I guess I should talk to Frank about putting some of this info on his site...
People always think it is so expensive to ship their tranny

Re: questions for 12SCNDZ
The solenoids rarely go bad. I have a CPT trans in my car and its definately worth every penny. I would highly recommend that you ship your trans to him and let the rebuild be done right the first time. Frank is bad to the bone and know the 4l60e inside out and backwards. He can build them blind folded if neded. So far mine has held up to high 11's and some hard launches with a 4000 stall Yank in front of it.
Re: questions for 12SCNDZ
I guess I will let Frank answer this then, I don't think it is standard practice but I am pretty sure if you had a lot of crap in there then they can be cleaned and tested... Mine were perfectly fine when my tranny was rebuilt...
Re: questions for 12SCNDZ
I always replace the pressure switch manifold. I only replace the shift solenoids if there's a check engine light or a symptom that might be related to a solenoid problem. The 3-2 solenoids do go bad on occassion, but it's not real common. Just as a referance, I pay $10.50 for a shift solenoid...So the set only costs $21.00. The PSM that I ALWAYS replace costs $33.00. The EPC (Force Motor) solenoids aren't real prone to failure in 60E's, either.
The sun shell should always be updated to a "Beast" shell, or a 65E shell in any performance rebuild.
Removing the T-G kit is probably one of the best things he did. Trans-Go kits do nothing but hurt parts.

Re: questions for 12SCNDZ
Well, like I said in my first post, the shop is doing the sonnax valve body fix, replacing all the electrical stuff, upgrading to a heavy duty sun shell, and I asked to get the best performance overhaul kit they carried. Maybe that could account for some of the price difference. The actual total came out to be 1660$. What place is rebuilding yours? I'm curious because you said the car is sitting in your garage. Did your mechanic just pull the tranny and take it w/ him? The shop rebuilding mine is Allied Transmissions in Santa Clara.

Yea my mechanic took the Tranny with him, it was cheaper for me, cuz i wont pay the shop more money, just pay the mechanic $250 for the labor, he took it to Tranny shop, i didnt ask which one. Will he has his hook ups, cuz he told them the tranny was for him, and told them he wanted the tranny beefed up to handle the stress of burnout/racing.
