Question about Short Shifters

Hey Guys...

Right now I have a Pro 5.0 on my T-56. I've had that shifter for about 3 years now and tonight I drove a '98 t/a with a "jared's short stick" and hurst shifter. It felt nice as hell and also very tight.

Does anyone else know anything about "jared's short stick" and also what could I do to make my transmission feel tighter? My car has about 140,000 miles on it and the car I drove tonight had about 50k on it. Would the only way to tighten it up be doing a rebuild? Thanks.

I have the short stick as well. It really made the shifts feel more positive, and tight. Not a bad way to go IMO.

I did a search for the jared's short stick and I was unable to find any information. Does anyone know the website/contact info?

How much is your 5.0 stick cut down? I've got over an inch cut off mine, with the recessed thread MBA ****. I have yet to feel one as tight or as tight as my shifter feels. I'm at 87K.

How many miles are on the 5.0 as well, it may be in need of a rebuild.

Re: Question about Short Shifters

i went from a hurst with the hurst stick, to a custom stick on it and the difference was night and day. It was like driving a new car. Shifts felt tighter and werent as far ( the damn bends on the hurst are annoying ) i think i made it like 1.5 shorter.

Re: Question about Short Shifters

Well, cut 3/4" off the stick and try it.. it's meant to be cut to length, that's why there is like 2" of threads... That's also why the "short" stick feels different because you've got an extra 1"-2" on the length of the stick.

I don't have anything to cut it with. I figure a sawz-all is the weapon of choice for this job?

Re: Question about Short Shifters

I've used a hacksaw before with good results.

take the stick off the car, and go to the hardware store with it. Find and buy a nut that is the same threads as the **** threads.

Thread that nut on first before you cut it off, then take the nut off after the cut. It cleans the cut threads up enough to let you thread the **** onto the stick again.

Re: Question about Short Shifters

I'm guessing Jared's short stick is just a rip off of Lou's Short Stick. I've had the B&M Ripper, and two factory Hursts with Lou's Short Stick. The Ripper is a little better (and I'd guess the Pro 5.0 probably is too), but the factory Hurst w/ the short stick is about 90-95% of the Ripper for a lot lower price. If I were starting with a car with the standard factory shifter, I'd just buy a nice aftermarket unit (Ripper or Pro 5.0), but if starting with a car with the factory Hurst, the short stick is a great deal.

What do you mean by "sloppy-jaloppy"-ness?

Re: Question about Short Shifters

If I wiggle the stick, there is some play there...

hate to make the expression, but it's not as "tight" as newer transmissions, if you know what I mean...

My spring is just fine, it always pulls it toward the center and I have no complaints on that one, but it does look like an interesting mod...

I just got an e-mail from the jared short stick guy..he said I would have to modify his stick to make it fit a pro 5.0...so I don't feel like doing that. Anyway, people were saying on here that it is better to cut the pro 5.0 rather than install a lou's short stick?

In nutrel or while the stick is in gear?

Is there a link for this Jarad's short stick? Where do you pick it up? How short, whats it look like?

The lou's short stick is very nice i heard for the Pro 5.0. What shifter do you have in there now?
