Question about shift kit

I test drove a trans am with a bunch of mods one of which was a shift kit. the 1-2 Shift was very rough almost like hitting a pot hole but then the other shifts were very nice. The owner said it was how he had it customized for the 1-2 shift to be perfect at WOT. I never got to try WOT but just driving it was a pretty rough shift. I believe him 100% but i have no knowledge of shift kits and was wondering if this is a common thing?

Re: Question about shift kit

I have a tranco shift kit and my 1-2 shift is very smooth. I also have it tuned and the shift firmness is higher than normal. I do have a TCI 3,000 Stall which takes away from some of the jerkyness. Not sure if that helped any, but I would be a little concerned that something isnt right if its shifting that hard in the 1/2.

Re: Question about shift kit

Well he said that it is custom set to shift really good and on the money at WOT and that in turn makes it a little rough when you are just casually driving. I dont know anything about this stuff so I am trying to get as much information as I can because I have enough to buy the car but not fix a transmission too

Re: Question about shift kit

You can have the WOT shift just the way you want, and the part throttle shifts the way you want also, it does not have to be one or the other.

Re: Question about shift kit

I would be cautious, I think that hard shift is a warning. If it is a shift kit, than it shouldn't be shifting hard on part throttle shifts all the time. If it was tuned, you can have it tuned to just WOT or just part throttle, since the computer puts in a different table of shift firmness at WOT. Personally I would want to see proof of the shift kit or tune. Also, test it at WOT, it should be firm, but not jerk the car or be hard.
