putting an old 9" or 12 bolt in....there has to be a way
With some fabracation, there has to be a way to put a chevy 12 bolt or ford 9" rear in our cars.
I once saw where someone put a ford 8.8 in a camaro, so I'm optimistic.
I've also saw somewhere that someone put our axles into a ford 8.8 carrier, and used our axle tubes. (can't find that post anymore darnit)
I know that there is a cheaper way than 2K on a rear end. If anyone has any info on how to do this, please let me know, I'm ready to try anything.
I've got a buddy that claims that between me and him, we can get a ford 9", 8.8, or 12 bolt under my car and make it line up. I think I have every tool that we could posibily need to make it happen, welders, grinders, torches, sledge hammers, you know, everything to make it go in smooth! (we've been watching too much monster garage!
I wouldn't think it would be that bad is it?

I put a 9 inch in mine, it wasnt easy and required a good deal of fabrication.I bought moser axle tube ends that allow the use of the stock disk brakes also used moser axles specified for the car and stock disks. I cut all the old brackets off the 10 bolt and reused them and then fabricated a torque arm mount out of 1/2 inch steel.it takes alot of measuring to make sure it all lines up in the end it might have been worth buying the housing from moser as well,I think I have about 1000 into it witch incluced a new spool 4.10 gears axles and axle tube ends.another 500 would get you a new housing a save a ton off fab work just get the housing package it 900.00 and includes the housing with torqe arm mount, axels and bearings. Then all you need is a junk yard center section.
Of course it's possible if you are skilled at fabbing and welding and have access to the right equipment. The thing is you will still need a ring and pinnion, a diff, and axles. So how much $$$ will you save if you value your time? Not so much as to make it worthwhile unless you have a lot more time than cash. But if you do, why not?

I like the idea of buying the housing and putting my J/K center section in it. I can a center section up cheap, so that may be a way to save some money.
Now we're getting somewhere.

ps...where would be the best place to get quoted on a moser center section?
Thanks

This was the first that I've heard of this, but you can bet that I'm gonna go this route. I know where a ford 9" rear is, and I'm pretty sure that I can get it for next to nothing.
Now on to finding the cheap positive traction unit!

I will be intersted in knowing how much OVER the price of a complete new one you finally end up spending. Espically when you have to replace a junkyard posi. I have watched guys penny pinch these things for years, and they always end up spending the cash in one area or another. As most of you know, playing with these cars is expensive. Buy price, pay twice. I just think for the time and energy you will have into finding a DECENT center section that you can use and trust, that you could break down and buy the whole thing from a site sponsor. Espically considering the fact you will need the center section setup for the torque arm. Remember, Ford trucks didnt have one of those
Good luck, and go buy it from Moser.

Yea I understand where your coming from. I think Moser has torgue arm brackets you can buy for the rear end. I just fabbed one up and it works fine. Yes, the hardest part is finding a center section thats not all busted up. But they are out there, I see LOTS of center sections with broken pinion supports. You can still save at least 300 bucks though. But then again, for just 300 more you can have it new!
