Push in the clutch, get a grinding noise

When I'm in the upper RPM range (3000+) in 1st/2nd (haven't tried 3rd, 4th, or 5th) and get out of the throttle and push the clutch in, either to coast or just a slow 2nd-5th shift, I get this nasty grinding noise and slight vibration in the shifter. It still stays in every gear when I'm at WOT, chirps the tires, nothing is wrong driveability wise.

Also, when I start out, if I let the RPM's drop too low, I get a grinding as well. The tranny has 142k on it and AFAIK has never been rebuilt.

is it just when you push the clutch in? or only when moving gears? Do you feel it only in the shifter? or in the pedal as well?

It's only when the clutch is in. Whether I'm switching gears or not, it still does it. I feel it BARELY in the shifter, just a small vibration. Nothing in the pedal though.

does it sound more like a slight rub than a grind? If so I know what you mean and I believe it is the throw out bearing. Mine did it occasionally for over a year. Just the other day I pulled the tranny and it's being rebuilt now. I'm putting the car back together with a spec stage 3 clutch on tuesday and I'm sure that it will be gone now. If it's not a slight rub and it's actually a grind when shifting it sounds like it's probably syncros.

It could be a rub. I thought synchros were only when going into a gear though. I think it is the T/O bearing. If you went a year with it like that, then that's sweet!

Thanks man.
