Pulsing when converter is locked

My 396 is in and now when my car locks the stall (10" 2800 RPM lockup stall) it pulses when below 3000 RPM. It's very annoying and I can program out the lock but would like to keep it in.

Anybody else have this problem?

The converter is not locking/unlocking because it goes away if I press the brake pedal enough to unlock the converter.

Let me know,
Mike

My car does this also. I think (for me) the converter is locking up and pulling the rpm's down below the powerband for my cam. It feels like a faint pulsing, but is is mildly annoying. If I make it lockup at a higher rpm then I don't get the pulsing. However I switched to a 700r4 that is not locked up by the computer so I don't know how you need to change the lockup point. Hopefully somone can let you know.

My problem is that I still have my 2.73 gears (3.73's going in ASAP) and they keep my rpms to low when I go to OD and then it locks. Your stroker should make enough power down low, but it is pushing around a big *** Impy. I know heavy cars can have more trouble with surging. Does your car keep surging if you get going faster (higher in the RPM band)? EDIT: I re-read your post and saw that you answered this. I think you should go to deeper gears or make it lock up later.

Your tranny will probably end up overheating if you get rid of the lockup. OD tranny's with higher stalls need to be locked when you are cruising.

The pulsing might be traced to the PWM valve in the valve body. You can use the Trans-Go PWM eliminator valve. It comes in all of their valve body kits. This valve makes it a "on or off" valve (no pulsing), then you can program the speed/rpm you want it to lock up at. I use this in "all" of my builds, without complaint.

I watched the guy build the tranny with a Transgo shift kit so I hope that part is in there.

The converter is made by Roadrunner converters here in town. A reputable builder of race converters.
