Pullin Transmission

My Trans went out on the 95Z *4L60E* and its being quite the beast to pull. I've pulled transmissions before, but this sucks.

Anyone happen to know what bolt size? Metric/standard? And How many? 6? I can't see schitt up there between my exhaust, wires, dipstick tube, ect being in the way

edit: yep, 6 bolts. Finally found a decent pic

I think they are standard, but can't remember. The hardest one for me to get was the driver side second from the bottom, the tranny tunnel was getting in the way. The top ones you have to get with some long extensions from the back. Once you get all six bolts off (make sure the torque converter is unbolted too) then back it off the dowel pins and drop it down so you can get the cooler lines off.

Yeah I've got a combined total of like 6 feet of extensions around her :lol2:

The drivers side is the beast for me too No way of gettin in there it seems. The wire harness seems to be fastened down RIGHT by the bolt so Its a beast to move it enough to the socket on there.

Actually, I think that's how I ended up getting that bolt off. I got it back on by using one of those flex sockets after a lot of pounding and yelling at the car . I would put the bolt through the tranny BEFORE you mount it on the guide pins. That way you don't have to worry about getting it back in the hole, just tightening it down.

wait, which bolt you talkin about? And what size I'm having a beast of a time figuring out which size it is because I can't get my arms up in there. But then again, I've only attacked the passenger side so far because its up near a wall on the drivers and I'm dreading goin over there haha. But I spose I gotta

Yep, got some done just now

Just now went and undid the torque converter, undid the mounts and supporting it by the back of it, and got a Bellhousing bolt out so far. Not lookin forward to the passenger side at all. I can't even see the top ones I only see like 3-4 of em besides the one I got

The passenger side should be easy. The bottom one all you need is a swivel extension. For the other two, use long extensions and get them from behind the tailhousing of the tranny. Flash a light down there to see them. As long as the tranny is dropped far enough you should be able to see them and get them pretty easily. You might have to move part of the wire harness to get one.

Driver side is the PITA. Bottom one again is easy. Top one is the same as the passenger top, long extensions do it. The middle one is the hard one to get. I loosened it with a box end, took me like 10 minutes to get it out. If you are having trouble breaking them loose, use a cheater bar (a pipe that will slide over the handle of your ratchet) or a breaker bar.

The Middle drivers side? That one doesnt seem like its hard to get to. Hrmm.

The dipstick/harness are in the way of the passenger side ones. I havent taken a good luck at it since i lowered the trans down, but just lowering it to about where it wants to hang is good right? Don't gotta undo anything else to make it lower? I have it supported just above where it wants to naturally hang down.

Exactly, dont literally cut your cross member, simply unbolt it with your jack under your trans slightly supporting it. This will let your trans "slouch" downward and give you an easier view of the bolts and such. Before you take all of your bell housing bolts out, be sure that your torque converter bolts are taken out (if you have not already done so). Keep the extension lengths to a minimum, the further you get away from that ratchet/air tool, the more torque you sacrifice. Dont quote me on this but i THINK the bell housing bolt heads are 14mm, if they are not, they're more than likely 9/16. Take your time, DO NOT lose your patience!! once your trans is all unbolted and secured/balanced on the jack, lower it down VERY CAREFULLY AND SLOWLY. Stop it at an optimum point for you to take loose your wiring harness to the side of it, and your cooler lines. Remember to flush your cooler completely before you fill the new trans will fluid, any old trash in that cooler will go right back into a nice new clean trans and make nice new problems . Again, you've done this before, its not too bad, just take your time, dont give up and dont get too frustrated.

Nice, thanks for all the help Yeah, 9/16ths fits, but 14mm seems to fit better. Taking the TC bolts off was a breeze, I was dreading needing to turn the engine with a flywheel turner or something... but I could just grab the Flywheel and spin it by hand while down there. Real simple. I have it hanging down with a jack stand under the end of it thats holding it like 1/2 inch or so above where it wants to hang fully down. So its supported but down there. I got the Bottom drivers bolt out so far, gonna attack the rest tomorrow. I'm hoping to do aftermarket trans cooler when I go back in, is there much advantage over the stock one? My truck has a cooler mounted in front of radiator and I really like it.

:edit: With the real long extensions, do ya use a swivel with them? or can you get a good angle without it? I dont like usin the Swivels blindly, too much of a pain to maneuver them up there. Sounds like Just swivel on the passenger side middle/bottom? Or did I read that wrong
