pros/cons 4.10 gears

being that I want 4.11 gears but they obviously wont fit in the stock 7.5 rear, I am probably going with 4.10s. Any downfalls besides sacrificing some top end? Sounds like a pretty good mod for the money!

Ask around for which brand, but 4.11's are available for the factory 10-bolt AFAIK. They're 37 & 9 teeth, instead of 41 & 10 like 4.10's are, so yeah, they should be stronger.

Try searching for "4.11" or "4.11's" in the Drivetrain forum.

I did for a long long time, seems like you are on almost every gear thread....smart man.

I like the fact that the gm gears are quiet and dont want to go thru the same problem you had with whinny gears.

Where could some gm 4.11s be found?

I think you will be happy with 4.10's. I have them in my 94 Z and love them. With having the 6spd I have the best of both worlds. The pull 1st thru 3rd is awesome and you can still cruise out the highway in 6th. Running 70mph in 6th Iam somewhere around 1700 to 1800 rpm. I am sure someone else on the board has them ask around. Hope this helps

IMO the only downfall to 4.10s/4.11s is having to shift like in a semi truck when casually accelerating from 0-55 or so.

Here's a handy link for calculating speeds with different gear ratios:

Pro: Pretty much just about everything.

Con: Traction

You will love em, I recommend the potentially stronger 4.11's as well.

Only if you use every gear.. For around town driving I only ever use 2,4,6.. No real need for the other gears, not even 1st. Saves some gas too that way.

The only con I can think of is noise. I had 4.10s in my 95 for over 3 years, and they whined a bit (although not much more than the stock gears in my Firehawk), and when cruising on the highway at 80 there was a lot more rear end noise (not just whine). Try cruising at 90-95 and see how everything sounds as that is about the same as 80 will be with 4.10/4.11s. There is often a cyclical resonance/harmonic/something at that speed that can be very irritating.

Otherwise, I love 4.10s and even with the above issue I'm still thinking about doing them on my Hawk.
