My rearend just got owned by my Street Twin... on stock tires???
I was out being stupid tonight and lined up against another F-body. I launched at 3000 RPM basically dumping the clutch. I was in 3rd gear before the car really started moving forward. At the end of the run I noticed that my rearend was whining pretty bad (on deceleration only)... it got a little worse by the time I had made it back to my house.
I've got 4.10's and a Street Twin, and the run was made on street tires. Any ideas as to how / why this happened... and how to prevent it? I thought this kind of stuff only happened when you actually had traction.
Thanks!

It doesn't only happen when you have traction.... Those stock 10-bolts are HORRIBLY weak, ESPECIALLY when faced with a Street Twin Clutch... hell... I know probably 1/2 dozen people who have done EXACTLY what you just did... most of them much worse because they actually did get traction...
You were lucky and only got some gear whine out of it and could drive it home. 4 out of the 6 guys that I know who did this had to get flat-bedded to the shop because they destroyed just about ever single component inside the rear axle assembly.
How to prevent it again: Bite the bullet and cought up the $2K for a 12-bolt or 9", it's the only way to prevent it.

Been there, done that with a Stage 3 clutch, on street tires, too.
Learned the lesson, never use a grabby clutch with the 10 bolt. I have busted 2 pinion gears, but was lucky enough to limp home with some HORRIBLE grinding and whining coming from the rear. The only thing you can really do is a 9" or 12 bolt.
Be warned, Strange 12 bolts take forever to ship. I had mine ordered in April, but it hasn't been shipped yet!

Really? I ordered mine the end of April and got it the first week of June.
What odd-ball options did you have?
Mine was as follows:
HD Posi
3-Ch ABS
1350 Yoke
33 Spline
12mm Wheel Studs
Chrome Cover
3.73 Gears
You may want to call Strange and see what the issue is.

Well, I just figured out why yours took longer... where you are located...
My company has to deal with export licenses all the time so we're set up to do them, but it still takes like 4-6 weeks for each license... I'll bet that was the hold up on getting you the axle.

I don't think it has to do with export licenses...Strange shipped the rear to NJ, where a friend of mine will pack it into a container and ship it to Europe.
I forgot to add, this was a Group Purchase, so I think TByrne was collecting orders before they actually placed the order at Strange.
Anyway, I don't care now, I just want to drive my car!

A little update...
With the girdle on, it felt like there was a TON of backlash. Maybe 10 degrees before the wheels would start turning. Pinion nut had a bead of weld on it from when I had the gears done at Speed inc... so the nut wasn't loose.
Expecting the worst, I popped off the cover.
To my surprise, the massive backlash I was feeling was only due to the posi picking up some kind of slack before turning the wheels. If I held the ring gear in one hand and the pinion in the other and checked for backlash, I felt the normal gap of a few thousandths. Okay, so much for that idea.
At least from further observation the gears look fine. All the bolts on the ring gear are tightened down properly, and the end caps show no signs of backing off.
I'm going to pull the posi later tonight and see if any of the bearings are chewed up.
TIA for the advice!
