Problem w/ 2nd Gear (t-56)
Problem w/ 2nd Gear (t-56)
Well I've taken on as my winter project to see what is wrong with my second gear in my car. I can put it into second, however when I do it is basically the same as neatral, the car will rev but not move. I was wondering if anyone had this problem before and how hard it was to fix, id like to do the work myself if possible. Also what is the best way to disassemble a t-56 trans.
Thanks,
Kurt

Mine has done that twice, once under warranty and once not under warranty. A freind of mine did this recently as well. It was not a synchro or the actual gear, each incident it was a hub (I think that what it was called) which needs to be replaced with some other part(s) it works with. Its a round drum with 45* angle teeth, kinda like a hole cutter you would use with a drill. Mine were totally rounded off. On a side job a GM mechanic charged us $700-$1000 depending on all the parts needed.
Sounds exactly like what happened to me yesterday, jumped on it in 1st, it wouldn’t go into 2nd and now I have another neutral where 2nd use to be. Looks like the transmission is coming out for repair. I’ve got 50K miles on my ‘98 Z and wonder if I should go for the full rebuild, new clutch, pressure plate and throw-out bearing, and upgrade components in the process or just get the problem fixed. I don’t race it and all the other gears seem fine. One more question, where should I take it for repair, the dealer, a transmission shop or a Camaro specialist? I want it done right. Thanks in advance for any input.

Well I took my to a transmission place and it turns out to be something similar with some of the gears completely gone. I am still waiting for a price quote on the parts, but I imagine its going to be pretty expensive.
Thanks for your help,

Well i just talked to the shop that tore it apart. There is more than just second gear gone, turns out the problems i was having w/ reverse was a syncro. All in all the price is going to be $2800 CDN plus tax. I almost died!! I guess ill have to start loooking at some other options.
Sorry to hear that. I took mine in yesterday. The mechanic nodded knowingly when I explained the problem. Seems they’ve fixed quite a few already. He said it would run about $1300 if they have to replace the hub/synchronizer assembly, 2nd gear and forks. Less if any of those parts are still good, more if they find other problems.
They called today, and asked when I needed the car. They had all the parts in stock except a new 2nd gear. They can get it from GM and finish today for $1500 or get it tomorrow from the manufacturer, about $200 cheaper. Apparently parts for the T-56 cost twice as much from GM compared to the manufacturer, Transmission Technologies, Inc.. Might be an option worth checking into.
