Question Problem with my top speed

Last year i had my trans re built and had the guy put a shift kit in. Now when i race my car can only go up to 110MPH? Could that be do to the shift kit? I believe i go through 3 gears up to 35MPH. I was thinking i go through all the gears to quick. I told a buddy of mine about this and he said that it sounds like the restrictor plate? Could it be that? If so, how do i remove it?

Thanks, GREG

I'm assuming 35MPH was a typo -- did you mean 135?

I highly doubt your car has a restrictor plate.

Please let us know the year and model of your car, plus any other details you think are relevant. Based on the fact that you posted in the LT1 section, I'm guessing it's a '93-97 V8 Camaro or Firebird...

110 sounds just about right for the PCM shutoff for any car that didn't come stock with Z rated tires.

My 97 had a 110 mph restriction on it for this reason. I removed it, but you have to reprogram your PCM to do this.

Re: Problem with my top speed

I don't know guys, it sounds like 110mph is different than it was...

To the original poster -
If the 35mph isn't a typo then something is clearly wrong. Does the speedo read normally? What are the rpm at different engine speeds? As mentioned, your car may have been restricted to 112mph from the factory through settings in the cars computer. They were trying to keep from exceeding the capabilities of the tires.

By the way, don't listen to your friend that mentioned restrictor plates. That's simply too far out there to even ridicule. He just isn't in touch with these cars....

I was thinking maybe he meant the separator plate in the shift kit was causing the problem or something...He seemed to indicate that it wassn't shifting correctly.

Re: Problem with my top speed

Hey everyone sorry i was not able to get on the computer just until now. But sorry i totally forgot to put what kind of car i have.

1994 Camaro Z28 Automatic

When i race off a light by the time i get to 35MPH i have already gone through three shifts. At the end i can only go to 110MPH. The RPMS will just keeping getting higher until i red line. My reason in this thread was to see whats causeing me to only get up to 110MPH. I wanna go faster because i wont even make it to the end of the track without pretty much maxing out my car at 110. I was thinking my shift kit is shifting my gears to quick? If thats possible Or is there something from the factory they put on it so i cant go any faster?

Thanks, and sorry for the late response!

Re: Problem with my top speed

OK are you saying that it is in 4th gear at 35 mph when you have it floored? If it did that it would really bog you down. If it isn't shifting properly, it could be the valve body, but it could also be the throttle position sensor, the vehicle speed sensor, or possibly the programming if you changed rear end gears and didn't adjust the program for it, or someone screwed up your programming.

And yes your car may be limited to 110 if the limit is set to that in the PCM because of the tires your car came with as was already mentioned.

Re: Problem with my top speed

I know nothing is wrong with my car. Drives and shifts great. My problem is just getting a higher top speed. I didnt know if something is blocking me from going faster or my shift kit shift points are to low causing it to be in its last gear at 110. So in another words all i have to do is reprogram my PCM to get it to stop blocking me from going any faster?

Re: Problem with my top speed

Top speed on speedometer is 150. One of my buddys maxed his out over 150, why can mine only go 110? Mine is a 1994.

Re: Problem with my top speed

Many cara got a speed limited from the factory. This can be disabled through programming the computer. I use pcmforless.com but there are several others that can help you.....

Good luck!

Since it came with the 155 speedo, it wasn't speed limited from the factory, as those came with a 115 speedo. You need some software, or find someone with the software, and see what is in the tune and remove the speed limiter.

I presume you bought the car used.

This may be incorrect (at least for 97, and I see no reason to be different for 94). My car came stock with the higher numbered speedo. As I stated before, this is a limit programmed into the PCM. The owner's manual shows 150 mph: http://shbox.com/pdf/1994camaro.pdf (page 92-94)
You need to reprogram the PCM to change this. I don't know how else to state this. I purchased my car new with this limitation. I used a programmer to change it. There is no other way.
Since it is a 94, it is OBDI and you can use TunerCat to reprogram. Also you can use data collection software such as DataMaster. This stuff is inexpensive (in comparison to OBDII s/w) and will give excellent results.
