Possible throw-out bearing failure

95 Z28 with a T-56 just FYI

Well the other day I was driving along in traffic and I heard loud clunking under my car. After some inspection of the problem I find that that clunking was the transmission, driveshaft, and exhaust all rattling against eachother from which I'm guessing to be a bad trans mount.

Well from the same incident arose a loud and steady grinding noise when its out of gear. It sounds like what I would imagine a bad bearing would sound like. When I depress the clutch pedal it fades out as the transmission stops spinning, then when I let go of the pedal it comes back. The car can drive okay, but with this noise I've only driven it back into the garage and never got it above 10 mph and have been keeping it off the road until I figure it out...

I assume this is easy to diagnose, just not for a noob to manual transmissions like me

Re: Possible throw-out bearing failure

well its not the throwout bearing
thats only in use while you are pressing on the pedal
if the noise goes away when u press on the pedal then its def not the throwout bearing

a bad bearing usually whines or sounds like little birdies chirpin away

i'm not much help right now, maybe someone else can shed a little more light

If it is the throwout bearing, I have one with 3-4K miles on it off an SLP pressure plate if you wanna buy it. They are $140 new from gm btw.

Re: Possible throw-out bearing failure

well it turns out it was the inner input shaft bearing.

Re: Possible throw-out bearing failure

common problem among transmission noises, sometimes meaning the input shaft is bent. the throwout bearing in these cars pulls the pressure plate away from the clutch, rather than pushes away. most performance cars are this way. usually a problem in the throwout bearing will make it hard to get the clutch off the pressure plate or opposite of that. it will often not let the clutch engage or disengage all the way.
