posi-trac or limited slip
posi-trac or limited slip
I have a 1993 z28 withe the stock 3.23 gear ratios and I was wondering if it is posi-trac or limited slip. I have heard different things from different people and i was trying to find out if it's posi-trac without having to take the differential cover off.
Re: posi-trac or limited slip
They are one and the same. Check your RPO codes and G80 will list Limited Slip Rear. Posi-Trac or Positraction was Chevolets trade name for a Limited Slip in the 60's and the nick name never went away.
Re: posi-trac or limited slip
Just an added question, both limited slip and posi-trac would both be basically one wheel normal movement right? My 96 SS has definitely has posi rear, both rear wheels spin at the same time. I also have a 94 3.4L and I think it has what you would call posi-trac, single right side movement, unless it slips, then traction switches to the left side. Both camaros have limited slip, but when they slip they both act different. I'd just like a further explanation as to the difference, if any, between posi, posi-trac, and limited slip.
Re: posi-trac or limited slip
Read the first response..... "Posi-Traction" was a trade name that Chevrolet used back in the 1950's and 60's for a clutch-style limited slip differential. People shorted "Posi-Traction" to "Posi".
Posi-Traction = Posi = limited slip differential.
Pontiac called it "Safe-T-Trac", but that name never caught on.
GM had used a couple different types of limited slip units in the 4th Gens.... including a clutch type and the Torsen cone type, and maybe one or two others. SLP offered options for the differential in the SS, I believe.

Read some of the above Posts and see the dumb confusion.

Right out of the Factory Service Manual:
G80 Axle, Rear Positraction (Limited Slip)
