Which posi in 12-bolt? + other questions

Stripped 2 teeth off the ring gear in my 10 bolt tonight at the track, so I'm ordering a 12-bolt within the next 2 days. Which posi should I get? If I drop $2500 on a rear and have the posi unit go out, I will kill people.

Also, is the $100 33-spline Eaton option for the moser the Heavy Duty unit? Is this a good posi? I'm looking at this and the Detroit TrueTrac.

and is the aluminum support cover worth it? I'm tight on cash, so if it's not mandatory, I'd rather not get it.

I would get the Strange 12 bolt. I went with it for a number of reasons and if you search ABA383 you'll see them...The Strange is a true bolt in unit (no bearings to press on) with an 800lb preload spring Eaton posi standard with 33 splined axles and a superior TA mount..I got the aluminum support cover because I like what its supposed to do and I like having drain and fill plugs...I have never had any problems with the 800 lb HD Eaton units...

Hands down, since your an A4 application, I would go with a Strange 12 bolt. They are much lighter than all other rears. Also the Torque arm mounting reuses your long bolts with nuts. Other systems rely on tapped holes with bolts and you'll never keep them tight. If you had an M6 car I would reccomend a 9". The Eaton posi will work just dandy for you.

Thanks guys...unfortunately, waiting for the rear to arrive is not an option :\

I need the car running again by Dec 17th (track day). Is there any way to get a Strange rear without the 6 week wait?

I like the Ford 9+ Currie with Detroit Locker myself. The 35 spline axles and heavy duty housing/third member are good for >800HP easily. And you can use the original bolts from your 10 bolt rear's torque arm.

^I would like to retain ABS (3-channel), so that is why I'm not going with a 9".

I'm running a Detroit True Trac in my 9 inch. I understand your getting a 12 bolt but just wanted to let you know how I like my true trac. So far I love it, it locks up very nicly and there are not clutchs to wear out. I called randy's ring and pinion and talked with their tech line and told them what I wanted and they told me that the true trac is a very strong unit.

I don't think there's anyway around the 4-6 week wait, My guess is that all of them are going to be close to that waiting range.

If it's a street or street/strip car, get the Eaton.

What he said^^^^...If you are getting the 12 bolt no matter who you get it through, opt for the 800lb pre load spring Eaton...Standard is 400 lb....The 800 lb is standard with the Strange...

That's what I plan on getting....then I have people telling me the Eaton is a POS and to get the Detroit, so it's a tough decision.

Re: Which posi in 12-bolt? + other questions

GM has used Eaton diffs since the 60s, and maybe even before that, so they're time tested. When my factory 1970 Eaton posi starts slipping, I'm going to rebuild it with steel clutches and the 800# spring kit.

From what I have heard, a locker is like 10 guys swinging sledgehammers on your car when you go around a turn. I haven't experienced it firsthand, but it seems plausible.
