Popping out of reverse
Popping out of reverse
Ever since I bought my Trans Am, sometimes when I put it in reverse, I will start moving and it will pop out and start making a grinding noise. I am thinking synchro, but not sure. Anybody had this problem before?
Edit: I forgot to mention that it is a T-56 in a 96 T/A.

Re: Popping out of reverse
Thanks for the info. Yeah I have tried holding mine in reverse, but it still did it. I have noticed that if I put it in reverse, take it out, let the clutch out, and then put it back into reverse, it doesn't do it as often, could it just not be going all the way in?
Every gear has a synchro. That's why you can be slowly going forward and still shift into reverse.
As to your problem 69gto96z, your reverse lockout solenoid might be acting up. That's the solenoid on the tailshaft housing, driver side, right below the shifter flange. Try removing it and see if you still have the problem. If not, then replace the solenoid. If the problem remains, you have an internal problem with the tranny.

I had the same problem...often the transmission would pop out of gear when I let the clutch out and give a subtle grind of the gear teeth. For a few months, I got away with holding the transmission in reverse. Eventually, I couldn't even hold it in reverse because it would pop out so violently. I tore the transmission apart and, sure enough, the reverse synchro hub and the synchro teeth on the reverse gear were worn round. I also found that the 1-2 and 3-4 synchro teeth were quite worn. The gear teeth were all fine, but the tiny synchro teeth on the gears were shot--so I had to replace the gears anyhow.
To summarize, the synchronizer is most likely your problem. My transmission rebuild with upgrade parts from D&D ended up being a costly, but very interesting project for me.

On any car i've driven with a stick, first time you try to pop it in reverse on a cold start, it doesn't go all the way in. Just take it out, put the clutch in and try again till its all the way in there, else it's going to do what you said.
Might not be your problem but thats what happens to me, haha.

I think, with all said and done, I had about $1600 CAD into rebuilding my T56. That was with a new reverse gear, 3rd gear, 5th gear, new 1-2, 3-4 and reverse synchros, all new bearings, seals, synchro blocker rings, steel 3-4 shift fork and having the case media blasted. Expensive, yes, but it's been fantastic for 30,000 miles since.
I also made the mistake of ordering parts (i.e. rebuild kit) before I had the transmission torn apart...I found I needed a lot more parts once I dug into it. If all you need is the rebuild kit, a rebuild would be fairly inexpensive.
