Overdrive vs. Drive on the streets?!?

Hi i own a 86 IROC, and as everyone knows paying for gas sucks...specially for a 16yr old.

My car has the 700r4 4speed auto w/ overdrive.

my older brother (who owns a 90 firebird w/ the same tranny) said i should keep the car in normal drive at speeds under 50..because the tranny has to downshift every time i hit the gas..."wearing out my tranny" as he said.

my father however (who owns a new suv) says to ALWAYS put it in overdrive to save gas.

please note that the prev. owner installed a rebuilt 700r4 w/ a shift kit a few months before i bought the car. (he provided receipts and stuff...i kno the shop that did it)

wat do you all think i should do? thanx alot!

I keep mine in D around town, unless I exceed 45 MPH or so. I really don't think you'll see much in the way of fuel savings by driving around in OD at 35 mph, and it's nice not having the car shift up and down every time you accelerate a bit.

Thanks!

Oh yeah, as of today I now keep my car in OD around town instead of D. It looks like third gear is on it's way out. Don't worry, it's in no way related to keeping the tranny in D, just lots of miles and a heavy foot.
