ok gear swap question?
ok i got a 96 trans am 6 speed, longtubes, orypipe, and k&n cai, and i am going to get 4:10's, what would i have to do in order to get 4:10 gears? would i have to get the speedometer recalibrated? or what all needs to be done with a gear swap?
You will need the gears and an install kit with all the shims, bearings, etc. If you have never done a gear install before, have it done professionally. It's not an easy task, and if done improperly you can trash your new gears.

That should have everything you need, short of fluid.

ok well u told me this 3001k and another guy said the 108k, what the hell is the difference, and the gears arent in there are they? what is everything in there? i cant just replce the gears in my rear end and be done with it? i gotta change the seals and bearings as well?
Look at the parts listing for each one of the install kits, there is a picture of what is in each kit, and neither of them includes the gears. They are the parts required to install a set of gear. The 3001K is the "deluxe" kit, including bearings and seals, the 108K is a "standard" kit without the bearings and seals. With a 12 year old rear axle assembly, unless you just happen to have had the bearings replaced in the last couple of years, it would be foolish to do the install without new bearing and seals.
You need a set of gears.
You need one of those install kits
You need 2 quarts of the correct gear lube
You need a bottle of GM limited slip differential additive.
If you plan to attempt to install these yourself (stongly NOT recommended), you will need a dial indicator to measure the backlash, a pinion depth gauge and machinists die to check the gear contact pattern.
I generally recommend you take a look at products from our Supporting Vendors. Thunder Racing has a good page with the gear sets and the install kits, with an explanation of the differences in the kits:

Ok well my buddy is wanting to go back stock on his z28 cause he drives a lot of highway, and I only drive mine on the weekends, but he is wanting stock and he wants to trade me, just swap out the whole rear end for rear end, he has a 95 firebird rear end with 4:10 and he wants to go back to stock, so u think I should do it?
If it has traction control, it's 4 channel. No traction control, it's 3 channel. You can also tell by looking at the ABS sensors. 4 channel rear ends have one sensor for each wheel, mounted near the wheel. 3 channel rear ends have only 1 sensor, mounted on the top of the "pumpkin" part of the rear end housing.
