No Backpressure!

Need some tranny help here folks! On our 94 Z, if you accerlerate from a dead stop in first gear and let off the throttle, the tranny acts like it just comes out of gear! Any ideas?

the tranny slides into neutral
it's what all autos do, saves gas and the tranny
now if you have it in 1 or 2, it stays in

so, dont worry about it, nothing wrong with your tranny

I don't know what you mean.

If he were leaving it in 1st and let off the gas, there would be engine braking. -or- If it was in D or OD and he let off the gas, it would upshift. "Sliding into neutral" in either case is not normal and auto trannies don't do that.

If you are getting no engine braking in 1st gear, then you need some work on tranny internals.

I have a friend with a firebird and he is having the same problem.
Its not right and it needs to be fixed soon or you are just doing more damage to the trans, although slowly.
you need a rebuild.

i'm just trying to repeat what i heard at some point
yes, it engine brakes in 1st or 2nd, that's completely normal
i'm a little blurry on how drive works, i think it engine brakes but you'd have to be doing a decent amount of speed for it to matter i think
and i'm not sure how torque converters work, but if its in overdrive (the t/c might lock up or something, sorry i never understood that but..) it does feel like it's in nuetral, i know that much and i'm positive it's normal
if i find the thread where i found this out at, i'll post it

Thats what I was afraid of! Any ideas on what specifically it might be, or is a complete rebuild in order?

I believe it has something to do with the sprag but don,t quote me on that.
At any rate its internal and you need a rebuild anyway so just start saving for it.
It will be cheaper if you remove and reinstall the tranny yourself but not everyone is capable of that, I did it and its not that bad.

I bet your referring to me. Mine doesn't engine break either, and the general consenous is rebuild. Mine has done it for over 25,000 miles, so I'm just waiting for it to go completely before attempting a rebuild. Just save your money and find a reputable shop.

Thanks for the info guys! I can do the tranny removal and replacement, so hopefully I can save a little $$ there.
I guess now its time to be picking out a converter and deciding just what to do to the tranny.
