Next step: Gears?

I've got a 97 Z28 with pacesetter LTs & ORY, Hooker catback and K&N CAI. I've been told many mods that I should do next, but gears seems to be the most common one...my question is, which set of gears should I go with? 3.73s or 4.10s? What are the advantages/disadvantages to each of em?

Re: Next step: Gears?

Are you an M6 or A4?

The usual response for M6 is 4.10 due to having 2 Overdrive gears.

The usual response for A4 is 3.73 due to having 1 Overdrive gear.

The upside is you accel faster, downsides are less topend (You will 95% never need to go that high anyway), and slight to moderate decreases in gas milage. Depends on how heavy your foot is.

Also make sure you know whoever you get to install them isn't a moron - incorrect installations can result in broken or overly noisy gears.

Re: Next step: Gears?

I'm an M6. I've got a buddy lined up to sell me his used 3.73's, but I wanted to get a wider range of opinions first....

What are the performance and mileage differences in the 3.73 vs 4.10 on an m6 with a semi-lead foot?

Do not buy used gears. His 373's are worked in for his rear only. Each rear is different and needs to be calculated to get the gears adjusted right, and once the gears are installed thier worn in to that set calculation. so if you install them into your rear that has a different measurement than his, you will end up with gears that have a worn in offset pattern.

Re: Next step: Gears?

If you plan on ever building the motor or using power adders then i would just do the 12bolt with the ratios suggested above all at the same time.

We'd be swapping his 10 bolt rear in. Sorry, should have mentioned that fact. I think I'm sensing from the responses and threads on other boards that I shouldn't do gears right now?
