The seal on the old filter was a bear to get out. I did not fubar the valve body in the process. However, the new seal won't go in. The Haynes manual said to be careful not to mess up the aluminum of the valve body while taking out the old seal. Mine appears to have a sleeve of a harder metal in there, and it's in the way of my new seal. It is definitely metal, because there was a burr on it (already there, not caused by me)that I got out with a screwdriver. Ideas? Thanks.

Is the old seal chewed up or anything. When I changed mine I left the old seal in the valve body because it was not damaged at all. Then just put the new filter in. If it's not damaged try putting it back in. Otherwise I do not know what you mean by a metal sleeve with a bur.

you really dont need to change that seal unless it got damaged some how

they are very tricky to get out and in correctly

It seemed hard, like it wasn't going to seal. The rubber came out in pieces. Do any of the filters come with a rubber-only seal, or one with a metal sleeve? My new one has rubber at the end, with a plastic sleeve.
Maybe what I could do is take a socket and tap it. If it moves, then I'll know it's not an actual part of the tranny and I need to find a way to get it out.

It turns out it WAS metal. I got it out, without damaging the aluminum bore. Phew!!!!
