need tips/suggestions on removing a4

I'm removing my engine and heard that it's easier to remove it w/ the transmission (a4) connected. I don't have much light under the car so I was wondering what all need to come off or be disconnected from the trans to pull it out from the top w/ the engine. The engine is all preped and ready to come out.

I thinking just the
-driveshaft
-shifter line
-torque arm
-trans. mount
-and the shifter from up top??? (haveing taken off the center councel and looked yet)
any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciatied.

Re: need tips/suggestions on removing a4

I have never tried to remove the motor from the top before with the tranny installed, so I can't verify if that is easier or not, but I do see it getting very messy with all the fluid that will come out the tailshaft when/if you tilt it back which I think you will need to do in this case.

But for tranny removal from the car you need to remove:
  • Driveshaft
  • Torque Arm
  • tranny cross member/tranny mount
  • shifter cable
  • sensor wiring
  • tranny cooler lines

Your dipstick is attached through a bolt going into the bellhousing that attaches the tranny to the block, if you are not going to remove it you will need to watch it doesn't snag anythig while pulling the motor/trans...

My opinion is if your already under there and got that far, why not just unbolt it from the block and flywheel and just pull the motor alone and leave the tranny under there, unless it is getting rebuilt or something??? I think that would be easier, but that is my opinion.

so there's only 4 bolts that hold the trans. to the block right?

6 trans - block bolts
3 (or 4 can't remember off the top of my head) flywheel - converter bolts

Are you removing this from your '95 TA? Yeah, there would (should) be 6 bolts around the bellhousing into the engine block, and 3 holding the torque converter to the flywheel (it's best to keep the converter with the tranny so you don't spill fluid out the front of the tranny as well!).

Have you considered dropping the motor out from the bottom (or in other terms, lifting the car off the motor?) ... I've not yet pulled a motor from a 4th-gen, but that looks to be the easiest route to do it really. Then you can leave the motor/tranny bolted together until you get the car away from them. Just a thought.

Remove exhaust, driveshaft, unbolt torque arm mount, remove inspection cover, unbolt torque converter from flexplate. Pop off shift linkage with a screwdriver, loosen 6 bellhousing bolts. I removed my cooler lines with the tranny partially lowered, since it's a PITA with the floorboard clearance. I also dropped the pan and drained the fluid beforehand since I was shipping my trans to Frank @ CPT, but I don't think you'll need to do that. You can plug the rear seal with a soda bottle cap to stop the fluid from leaking out when you remove the driveshaft.

To get to those from underneath, you need a really, really long extension and a flex socket! I just went through this a couple weeks ago changing a broken flywheel on my car. Patience and a long extension man .

plus dropping the cross member and exhaust and letting the tail of the tranny come down helps a lot too.
