Need Ring & Pinion Advice!!!!!

Hey fellas, I have a 91' Z-28 with the 5.7 and an automatic. I have had to replace or mess with my rear-end at least 6 different times and im sick of it. The car isnt built that much up from stock so it doesnt have carzy HP or anything.

Here's my question I have an Auburn gear pro perfromance 3 series carrier and richmond 3.73 gears with less then 1000mi on them (even less on the carrier). Well from installation they have been whining horribly, and my installer tried to reset the depth 3 times already with not much progress, he contacted Richmond and he said that they have a harmonic problem with there gears and its either hit or miss (not sure if hes blowin smoke or if tis actually true.

Anyway I have performance Motive gears to replace the Richmonds but have been hearing mixed reviews on them. I dont want to mess with this rearend any more so am I gonna get alot of noise out of these or are they good to go? I have no trouble returning them if there is a much better option out there so what should I do fellas?

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

I've been pleased with motive gears. They make a good gear. I wouldn't worry about noise being a function of manufacturer. I'd worry more about the shop installing the gears.

My motives have been staying quiet.

Re: Need Ring & Pinion Advice!!!!!

How many miles were on the gears before the gears were re-set? AFAIK,
once the wear pattern is in the gear set, your done. Doesn't take many miles before that happens. Before I did my gears, I had heard many people complain of noisey 3.73 performance gears. I used a GM gear set
in my factory rear and they were very quiet. But, now, my Strange rear
with 3.73 gears is noisey. If you want quiet, try GM gears.

BTW, having stiff bushings in lower control arms, panhard bar, & torque arm will amplify any gear noise.

Re: Need Ring & Pinion Advice!!!!!

it was around 2-3 hundered miles, I had it done originally a few weeks before putting it away for the winter then redone a few weeks after bringing it out, then re-redone a few weeks after that. I do have all Hotchkis suspension in the rear as well, so thats probably helping it a bit.

Either way no rear end shouldnt be this loud, it sounds like a jet taking off LOL. Thanks again fellas

I think the "hit & miss" with Richmond 3.73's may in fact be true. I had a set that were as loud as you're describing (sounded like I was always being chased by an ambulance!) The gears were loud from day 1, and I had them re-checked, "tweaked" a little, re-checked again, and still they were loud as loud could be. At the time I just put my 2.73's back. Then a couple years ago I got a set of Richmond 4.10's, and they were very quiet from day 1. They worked great 'til last Sunday out on a road course. I guess hammering on and off around corners and down the straights for 2 days in a row didn't agree with them?!?! (took a couple teeth off the pinion).

From anything I've read on here, Motives have traditionally been fairly "quiet" gears though .
