Need proper trans-coolersize
Need proper trans-coolersize
Hello, I am awaiting the arival of my high stall torque converter and i need to know a little about transmission coolers. My 98 Camaro is basically stock and i plan on keeping the air conditioning in it and placing a transmission cooler in front of it. I tried to measure the area in front of the Air conditioning and had no luck getting accurate or even helpful measurements from it. I would like to get the biggest size transmission cooler without having to modify the engine compartment at all if possible... I would like to run a 21,000 GVW- 24,000 GVW, preferrably a B&M because they are crossflow and are self regulated or another brand with this same type of set up. If I had to i would run a 19,000 but I would rather have more cooling capacity when needed. I did not have time tonight to find the measurements for the coolers tonight but users that have done this or know more about transmissions should know. The mods on my car so far are as follows, Slp subframe connectors, Volant intake, hotchkis strut tower brace.... there are more but i do not think they will affect the cooler in any way. If you know the measurements of the coolers that will fit or of the area in front of the airconditioning will you post them. Any help will be greatly appreciated and im sure that i will have more questions by tomorrow morning

Re: Need proper trans-coolersize
when you say careful work what do you mean. Do you mean that i would have to take anything out of the area or just careful work as in getting my fingers down into the space?
Re: Need proper trans-coolersize
Any of the coolers you mentioned will fit just fine. The tranny cooler is quite a bit smaller than the area you would be putting it in at the front of the Radiator/AC so no worries. I have a B&M 24,000GVW and had it installed in that very same spot in less than an hour problem free. Get the biggest you can find to ensure proper cooling.

routing the hoses carefully so the razor sharp blades dont cut them with the normal vibration of driving
putting them on carefully so the razor sharp blades dont cut your fingers up (been there, done that, got stock in Band-Aids lol)
you may have to tweek the metal a little to have enough room for the hoses.. nothing major at all. no cutting or anything, just a little bend.
Re: Need proper trans-coolersize
bigger is always better with tranny coolers but a 24,000 should be sufficient unless you're getting crazy with the stall/horsepower. as was said, any of those sizes will fit over the AC condensor in the front.
personally, i only have a 22,000 GVW cooler (and a deep pan) and my tranny will only warm up to around 155-160 degrees in normal driving, 180 if i beat on it for awhile (made 9 dyno pulls on it one day and still couldn't get it past 185-190). this was with a pretty slippy Vig 3200 converter (3800 rpm true stall.)
i suggest a deep tranny pan (the GM truck pan is good, or i have a BBK +3 quart pan, it seems to work GREAT but it hangs just a bit low), and a quality tranny temp gauge (the electrical ones are really easy to install) to keep tabs on your trans. you should be all set. good luck.
