Need help w. gear installation!
Re: Need help w. gear installation!
Unless your mechanical skills are above average. A DIY gear change for a low skill person is just asking for problems and downtime for the car.
And your question confirms your skill level.

Re: Need help w. gear installation!
Im not going to put the gear in myself.I have a mechanic friend from the chevrolet dealership that will install it,but he seems to want me to use all slp stuff for some reason. That is why I wanted to kno what would I need to get if I wanted to install the richmond gear,Im jus trying to figure out a price range.
Re: Need help w. gear installation!
I was just looking at Richmond or either Motive , a few of my buddies have put Richmonds in some mustangs and they have always held up good. Both of those are also a little cheaper then the SLP stuff.I just need to kno is the gear and installation kit all that I need to get it installed. Also, Im prety sure its a 3 series but any help with that would be nice. Thanks
Re: Need help w. gear installation!
Gears, installation kit and the right tools along with patience. Its a 2000 so I would just get the basic install kit, replacing the bearings and races is just more of a bitch with out a shop. oh ya you have 3 series carrier
Re: Need help w. gear installation!
So far *knock on wood* my Richmond 4.10's have held up. They don't have a lot of miles on them, but already have a couple days of track running on them
. They are almost as quiet as my factory 2.73's too
. Now the Richmond 3.73's I had were a different story though

Re: Need help w. gear installation!
I'm suprised no one has mentioned this yet but Richmonds have a reputation for whinning like a biatch. Go with GM gears. Of course what really matters is the install... make sure your bud knows what he's doing or you'll wind up with some gear whine. I had to deal with some pretty good gear whine not too long ago and it was a damn irritating noise. You could even hear it over my 3" straight pipe dual exhaust...
I just went with 3.73 in my six speed and used plain on GM gears.. they've been quite as can be of course I don't have many miles on them yet either. While you didn't ask I will say that I think 3.73 is plenty for a daily driven car that sees the interstate on occasion. I think with 4.10's I'd have serious traction issues on my bfg kdw rubber.. that and I'd really be shifting a helluva lot. First gear would run out so quick.. you'd just stab the pedal and then shift. 4.10's also won't be as strong as 3.73's either... If I were to go with 4.10's I use 4.11's instead.. less teeth and a stronger gear I think. Anyhow.. just a thought..
Also, make sure you use a solid pinion spacer as opposed to the crush sleeve... helps keep that tiny pinion gear in place.

. The only difference is 1 less tooth on the pinion (10 vs 11). The ring gear still has 41 either way. Now I agree that 4.11's (37 ring / 9 pinion) may be a good option. But the 9 tooth pinion contradicts your theory on 4.10's vs. 3.73's, so that's why I questioned what you said
.
Re: Need help w. gear installation!
I have heard nothing but good things about the motive gears, Richmonds also, but they can be noisy. SLP is just overpriced factory parts.
The 4.10, 4.11 may be a lil weaker than a 3.73 but our 10-bolt isnt the strongest to begin with.

.You summed it right up for me. You end up with a smaller pinion gear with 4.10s than you do with 3.73s. Now, 4.11s seems to correct this problem and I know a lot of people use them over the 4.10s. Myself, I have no first hand knowledge with either gearset (I haven't driven or broken either one). It just seems like commonsense that when the pinion is the weak point in the rear end then fewer/bigger teeth are better than more/smaller teeth. This is why I suggested the 4.11's if you decided to go with a short gear set.
I still stand by my original statment though that 4.10's/4.11s are quite possibly overgearing. I think the 3.73s are plenty.. I'm happy with them and the car is still driveable and they do make quite a difference on the highway/interstate. Now, 4.11s may be fine I just don't want everyone with a six speed to jump blindly in without really thinking about the options.
