need HELP ASAP - how to remove c-clip on axle

got axle seal leak on driver side..

car is in the air now.

wheel, rotor, diff cover are all off... fluid drained..

Axle won't come out.. (not bent). I read about removing c-clip... I pushed the axle in to max... but can't see "c-clip"..

read something about a "block". is that the bronze colored cylinder right between the two axles? It won't allow me to push the axle in any more.

How do I remove it? Do I remove it?

I've seen the c-clip on a past Ford van I owned... how far from the end of the axle will the c-clip be? I can see about 3/16" of axle next to that bronze colored cylinder.

Any/All help appreciated.

I did search, but came up w/ not much... off to shoebox's site to troll around.

thx

its been a while since Ive done it but
you have to remove the cross pin first then the axle will go in further
the c clip is at the end of the axle may be 3/16"
a magnet retrieval tool works good to remove it

found it... axle is out. :-)

saw a "sticky" w/ diagram at the top of the drivetrain threads... thx for that..

bonehead move on my part was initially I'd put it up on ramps so I could easily drain the differential. Then I lift the driver's side rear so I can remove the wheel, brake caliper, rotor etc... good so far..

Then I read about the cross pin BUT... the 8mm bolt that holds it in is not visible... AND now my passenger side is on a ramp...

Had to put some boards under the jack and then put that side on jack stands too...

I was then finally able to spin the passenger wheel which in turn rotated the ring gear etc...

AND finally I was able to get the 8mm bolt that holds in the cross bolt...

so now I've got the axle out and am looking for a tool of mine to remove the seal and bearing from the axle tube end... typical... I can't find it. Will probably stop by advance and "rent" a tool???

Thought this was going to be a "slam dunk"... turning out to be a PITA..

Thx for the help tho... This site rocks. W/in reason I don't fear any jobs anymore, because there's always you guys to bounce questions off..

Welcome to the world of working on cars... "everything" seems like a slam-dunk, but SOMETHING always gets in the way
