Necessary tools for settup up rear gears?

OK, if I wanted to setup my own rear end, what tools would I need to do so?

Okay off the top of my head you will need a mic to measure backlash, magnet, torque wrench, and bearing puller. Unless you know someone experienced I would highly recommend not setting up your own rearend.

dial indicator to measure backlash, inch pound wrench to measure preload along with the tools mentioned by IDOXLR8.

So when I use a dial indicator to measure the backlash, what exactly am I measuring? Like what is the procedure for measuring backlash? Don't worry, I won't do this myself, unless I can find someone experienced that will give me a hand. But even if I go to a shop to have this done, I'd like to know exactly what's going on.

When you measure backlash, you use the dial indicator and the mag base. You do this, once everything is installed (pinion gear, carrier and ring gear). Attach the mag base to the rearend housing (on a flat surface, like where the differential cover bolts on). Put the dial indicator up against the ring gear and zero the indicator. Then with your hand, turn the ring gear and see what number you get. Now, when i say turn the ring gear, you don't want to use much force to try and turn it. It's basically just a movement of the ring gear, before it actually starts to turn the pinion gear. You want to see how much movement (lash) the ring gear has before the pinion gear starts to spin.

I hope this is clear enough. You might be able to go to one of the gear manufacturers websites, like precision gear, and see if they have any illustrations for this. It might be better to see a picture than try to explain with just words.

Yep, what thermwood1 said. Hold the pinion yolk still with one hand then move the ring gear with the other. Its a PITA and thats the reason I chickened out and had someone do it. I tried practicing on the stock gears and got a different reading every time so I said F it! Glad I did!

After your install your eyes and some paint are a big help to check the pattern.
