Mysterious Clunk Finally Diagnosed
Mysterious Clunk Finally Diagnosed
Backstory:
I've been chasing this clunk I had for the last 1.5 years under my car. It would clunk between the 1-2 shift under hard acceleration. Right when it would hit 2nd gear, I'd hear/feel this bad clunk that just resonated throughout the whole car.
I checked the tranny mount late last year. I was on the 3rd stock replacement. I did have the Energy Suspension poly mount as a backup, but I had it installed at one time and didn't like the vibration from it. So I went back to the stock replacement.
After checking the tranny mount again (which wasn't cracked), torque arm bolts, driveshaft loop bolts, panhard rod bolts, control arm bolts, shock bolts, etc., I still had this friggin' clunk. I even had the u-joints replaced on the driveshaft and had it balanced, and even then the clunk still remained.
I decided to go back to the tranny mount. Last night, I crawled under there, loosened the cross member and when it came loose, it sort of jumped forward and clunked. It sounded just like the clunk I'd been hearing. I put in the Energy Suspension mount, raised the tranny to normal height and re-installed the cross member. I believe I must've had something on a bind in there originally. I took the car out for a spin, and behold - no more clunk. She's nice and tight between and shifts too. I get a lot of vibration in my console around 70 mph, but I can deal with it. I'd rather have that than the clunk!
Just thought I'd share...
