More than likely its the beginning of the end for that trans. Mine started by popping out of 1st HARD sometimes when I'd launch. Then it would grind 3rd every now and then when puttin around town. Finally, It would get stuck in 4th gear. To the point that I had to leave from a stop a couple times because it would'nt come out until I'd get up to 35mph or so. Then I could man handle it out. When that started I figure it was time to strip her back to stock and let the Warranty cover it . But, it's gonna be time for another one pretty soon I guess, and the warranty is over

Anyways, sorry to hear about you're problems. I'd start looking for a replacement

Sounds like your third gear needs to be replaced along with the syncro. Possibly the sleeve as well. I don't know what this involves on a T-56, I haven't rebuilt mine yet. You really won't know for sure untill you pull it apart, but it definately needs to come apart. SORRY, I don't mean to be the deliverer of bad news. Once you get it apart, you'll know for sure. I have heard that it is no joke rebuilding these trannys though. Theres nothing on my car I won't tackle, but the decision has to be left up to you with your car. These trannys, although manual, are said to be a nightmare. Not sure though. Like I said, I haven't torn mine down yet. This is just what I have heard.

Definately get a second opinion from a trannsmission shop who is familiar with these trannys. I'll be willing to bet money that the third gear and the syncro need replacement though. Sorry!

GOOD LUCK!

It's probably a syncro.....when I bent my 3-4 shift fork it would sometimes pop out of gear but didn't grind.

Did you look and see if there were any bullet holes in it?

Try double clutching and see if the problem disappears. If it does then more than likely its just your synchro. This was a comon problem on my old car. However, if it still grinds then its prolly just a bigger problem waiting to happen.

When going from 2nd gear into 3rd gear you normally push in the clutch, gear to 3rd and then release the clutch and push in the gas at an even rate of speed.

With Double clutching all you are doing is pushing in the clutch, gear from second to neutral, release the clutch. Then push the clutch back in and then gear from nuetral to 3rd, then release the clutch and push in the gas at an even rate of speed so you dont stall.

Basically going into nuetral allows your synchro to mesh with the gears properly so you will not grind.

Try this and tell us what happens.

Its prolly just a synchro. I would take it to a tranny shop and ask em how much it would cost to replace the synchro. Or find a buddy that wouldnt mind working on it for beer.
