Is my Ring and Pinion done for?

This is actually for my Grand National, I hope its alright im posting it here. The car has a 10 bolt 8.5". When I got the car, it had a leak from the pinion seal. I went to replace the pinion seal and noticed that the pinion nut was not very tight at all. I replaced the pinion seal and torqued down the pinion nut with an impact (I know, I know). The rear end then had a slight whine at about 55 MPH. I only put a few hundred miles like this. Do you think installing a new crush sleeve with proper preload will save this rear end? Or is he rest going to need to be inspected.

Thanks,

Rob

Chances are you over-torqued the pinion, and did one OR BOTH of two things:

A) too much load on the bearing = pinion bearing is/has failed.
B) pulled the pinion too far forward, throwing off the gear mesh, and thus, causing a whine.

To start, I'd try and replace the crush sleeve and TORQUE IT PROPERLY and see if the whine goes away (technically the gears "may" have a new pattern worn into them, but as long as you get it back to its proper alignment, the whine will likely disappear). However, if you did damage to the pinion bearing(s) (inner/outer) then the noise might NOT go away, and you'll have to pull the diff apart to change them out .

I don't know specifically for the 8.5" 10-bolt, but I know for the 7.5" that the torque spec is somewhere around ~20 - 20 inch-pounds of drag (turning the pinion). You want them to turn nice and free, but not actually "free wheel" if you give it a spin ... it should have a small amount of drag/resistance. It's easy to get carried away with an impact gun .

I agree I think if you just put a new crush sleeve in it and if you use the old brgs...that tq is good 20-22 in lb rotating
with new brgs you want a tab bit more....not sure what is recomended but probly 30-35 in lb. And get some 272 loc-tite on that pinion nut

I don't have to pull everything out to change the crush sleeve, do I?

yes the rear end needs to be torn down, and all the bearings inspected and replaced as needed, if your looking to upgrade it some use a solid pinion spacer, lots of torque and hard launches can actually collapse the stock crush sleeve and the nut will get loose and you can have the same problem again
