My 6 spd did something weird this morning, help me out

It only maybe once or twice done this before this morning...and that was in the last 2 months...

Its pouring out this morning so I take the car to work, TCS is on. About a half a dozen times when starting in first gear it grinding as if I was trying to put the car in gear without using the clutch. So I think because its slippery maybe it has something to do with the TCS bumping the throttle up, even though I don't feel it.

I try turning it off, it still does it. The only difference is this morning I'm very very slightly riding the clutch on first gear only to prevent wheel spin on take off. If I just cradle the clutch out it doesn't do it, and it doesn't do it everytime I engage first gear with the throttle as well. It didn['t do it in any other gear.

I know this sounds odd but, anyone else experience this? Seems like if I rode the clutch a bit higher on start it did it....weird.

This is a wild guess but perhaps the hydraulics on the clutch are going. So perhaps it is grinding when you try to put it in gear because the clutch isnt disengaging.

Re: My 6 spd did something weird this morning, help me out

The car was already in gear everytime, with the clutch pressed to the floor. As I stopped at a light I had the car in gear as I was gearing down, come to a stop, clutch in, gear stick in 1st, waiting to go again.

It made this sound without me moving the gear stick. It was at the point engaging the drivetrain in first gear from a stop. If I didn't have the RPMs as high - she was fine. (and the RPMs were not high anyways)

does it only happen in certain gears? a synchro or two could be going.

i was thinking a syncro also, but try shifting into another gear before you go into 1st and see if that helps, i know some cars have a problem with Reverse and have to do that

See thats the thing, the car went into gear fine when I was gearing down. I'm sitting stopped at the light, car still in 1st, clutch all the way in. Light turns green and I start to go....a slightly grinding sound almost if not the same as if you missed a shift and grinded a gear.

So bizarre. Only happened in first gear, when starting to move.

Do you mean even though I'm sitting there in first, before I try to move maybe slap her in second and then back into 1st and then start to engage the clutch?

Re: My 6 spd did something weird this morning, help me out

So it did it again today. First in the morning on the way to work, its pouring outside. For the most part I was babying the clutch so it only happened once.

Then on the way home, sunny and dry out I go to take off from a right...*GRIND* I immediately stop trying to engage the clutch to gear - by putting the clutch back to the floor, not once moving the gear stick, and then I baby her off the line again.

Once the car is up and moving theres no problem. Just from a start. argh.

are you sure its from the trans and not something else? I had a torque are come loose at the diff and this same thing happend to me when I would start to leave after stopping a grindin vibration. the prob was torque arm loose and the u joints were binding up because the diff was shifting....

Mine would make the same type of noise and it was the release bearing on the clutch was going . On the T56 the release bearing spins when the clutch is engaged and it comes to a stop when you push the clutch in , opposite of a regular clutch , so when I would release the clutch to get the car to move the bearing starts to spin and had just enough play in it to start to shimmy and would make the noise .

You seem to be close to what I was starting to think it was. Something to do with the release bearing or something. Easy way to fix this without removing the tranny?

Or can I for now just put the clutch in and then the car in gear just before I go to take off?

The only way to fix it is to replace it . When mine started to make the noise I drove it about a month before I changed it and when I did change it it wasn't much play in the bearing but it was loose so it's one of those parts That could last a awhile or it could go tomorrow .
