Moser 12bolt - Pulling Axles?

Just bought a used Moser 12bolt. Couple questions...

This 12bolt is setup for LS1 rear brakes. As I understand it, I need to pull the axles and install some 1/8" shims on the axles before I install new axle bearings. Anything else I'm missing? Do I have to have the rearend "set up" again, or can I just install the shims, press on the new bearings and bolt it back together?

Also, I can't seem to get the axles out. The stock 10bolt is very easy. Pull diff pin -> push axles in -> drop Cclips -> slide axles out. I have pulled the diff pin on the 12bolt, but the axles wont budge. Is there some other clip/fastener holding the axles in?

How do you pull the axles out of a Moser 12bolt?

Ryan

not too sure about yours, but on mine, the axles are held in by the backing plates to the axle tubes. there should be T bolts on the inside of the edge of the axle tubes and nuts on the backing plate sides...

Also on ls1 rears they have wheel abs sensors. You have to take those out to get the axle far enough in the get the c-clips out. Not positive your 12 bolt has those sensors in there but if it does those need to be takin out before the c-clips come out.

Glad to see you got a 12-bolt now. Now you can put slicks on and get some real times on the new motor.

You're preachin' to the choir brutha!

Thanks guys. I was just a little confused with the Moser setup. No Cclips, the bearing is pressed onto the axle, and finally the axle/bearing assembly is pressed into the housing.

ROTFLMAO,
Hey now I'm use to dealing with moser 9 bolts . Sounds like the same type of setup as those. Just didn't want to be talking out of my ***. So just to clear some things up I take it the bearings are pressed on each axle, install axle seals on the housing and slide axles in. Then use the brake brackets to hold in the axle? Just like there 9 bolt housings?

Thx Mikey H.A.M. slave

P.S. nothing wrong with using a BFH on this one but a slide hammer would probably work a bit better

You got it, Mikey.

~$500 for an axle sliding hammer? I like special tools, but for the couple of times that I'll pull axles (in my lifetime) I don't think I can justify that one .

I got a bearing puller kit from Advance Auto Parts for 130$. It's a slide hammer with a bunch of attatchments. After many years of pulling stuff with a punch and hammer I don't know how I kept my sanity without this tool. Had wheel bearings pulled in 2 minutes, both sides. The 6.99$ seal puller works great, too.
