Moser 12 Bolt - Gear Whine Normal???
I have put about 4,000 miles on my Moser 12 Bolt w/3:73 gears in the last year and have experienced a somewhat quiter whine. Actually, I had a local trim shop install sound deadening material and thicker carpet padding in my entire rear section and underneath the rear seats. This has muffled the sound some what, at least in the first four gears. However, what probably does not help when it comes to driveline harmonics is my suspension upgrades to include Hotchkis subframe connectors, trailer arms with polyurethane bushings and pan hard rod. I also have a polyurethane transmission mount with a custom steel driveshaft. According to U.S. Gear, the F-Body transmits noises like a "tuning for."
Bottom Line: Does anyone have a "quiet-as-a-factory Moser 12 Bolt in their 4th Generation Camaro? Or, based on what Moser says (i.e., expect gear noise in an F-body) and my suspension modifications described above, will I always experience gear noise?
Note: The noise is not that bad but I am always looking for "thee" solution.
Thanks!

hope you don't mind me chiming in with a question about gear noise as well, but i'm just curious, what exactly is normal stock gear noise???
i'm just wondering cause my Z is my first RWD car and when start to accelerate normally from a full stop at a red light for instance, i hear a little bit of gear noise up until say about 2500-3000RPM, then gone (in first gear only). this is normal?
not that it isnt something i cant live with, but i'm just curious, if that would be eliminated by brand new gears in the stock rear end?

jay G's right they shouldn't whine at all...not even the cheapest of gears. They sell all the tools needed pretty cheap at summit though.
Run the pattern to see if it's contacting right first though...

My gears whine and so does my blower.
On the freeway, the rearend gears are louder than the blower is. It doesn't really bug me much at all, high performance cars are supposed to be loud.
I believe the gears on the Mosers are setup for a stronger gear pattern than stock. That is, the pattern would favor the toe of the ring gear, not the heel. Under heavy load, the pattern moves outward on the ring gear, more towards the heel.
All in all, I wouldn't expect a Moser or Strange gear set to be quiet if set up for maximum strength.

My Moser 12 bolt is quieter than my factory 10 bolt was. But then again, when I ordered it, I called them and told them that my car is mostly street driven and the guy said he'd set it up for that.
